Once upon a time, a godmother cursed the Thistledown sisters, giving Viola poisonous skin and Clara a venomous voice. Now, stuck in their reclusive lives, touch-starved Viola brews potions for the apothecary shop and dreams of an impossible romance, while silent Clara drinks away her sorrows and yearns for the sea and adventure.
A pharmacy opens next door, owned by the nettlesome yet charming Grim siblings, Thorn and Daphne. When this new business threatens their livelihood, Viola and Clara rekindle their dark past as assassins in order to save their shop. Known only as the Poison Bloom Killer, the sisters use their deadly gifts to kill abusive men for money.
Despite the rivalry, the Thistledowns become entangled with the Grims. Daphne, who suffers from an ancient disease only a godmother can cure, learns sign language for Clara during their blossoming romance. Meanwhile, plant-loving Thorn pesters Viola with his obsession over the Poison Bloom Killer mystery. When the Grims unearth the deadly truth, though, they blackmail the sisters. Viola and Clara must locate the last living godmother to save Daphne’s life or risk the fate of a witch: burning at the stake.
Viola Thistledown spun spells and enchanted potions for the ailments of others, but she could not heal herself. She was cursed, not sick.
